About
Ambien, also known by its generic name zolpidem, is a medication commonly prescribed for the treatment of insomnia. Insomnia, a condition characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, affects millions of people worldwide and can significantly impact daily functioning and overall health. Ambien belongs to a class of medications called sedative-hypnotics, which work by slowing down brain activity to promote sleep.
Dosage of Ambien varies depending on the patient's needs and the specific formulation prescribed. For the immediate-release form, the usual starting dose for adults is 10 mg taken right before bedtime. For older adults or those with liver impairment, the recommended dose is usually 5 mg. The extended-release form, Ambien CR, is typically prescribed at 12.5 mg for adults and 6.25 mg for older adults.
