About
Joshua Matthew Costin, PhD completed his Bachelor of Science at Florida State University with degrees in Biology and Psychology with a minor in Chemistry, before earning his doctorate in Microbiology & Immunology at Tulane University in the laboratory of Dr. Robert F. Garry. As a card-carrying virologist, he has published research primarily on HIV and flaviviruses (dengue virus in particular). His research interests include viral:cell interactions, viral entry, and immune responses to viral infection.
After completing his postdoctoral studies, Dr. Costin worked as a forensic biologist for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) before taking a job in private industry where he ran a Biology department for a nutraceutical startup until accepting a position at NOVA Southeastern University as an Assistant Professor of Microbiology. He has been awarded two patents for his work on novel antiviral compounds and has several other patent applications pending. He is a member of the American Society for Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTMH), American Society for Virology (ASV), and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).
At NOVA Southeastern University, Dr. Costin serves as the course director for the Microbiology course in the School of Optometry, the Assistant Course Director for the 2-semester Research Practicum course in the Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (KPCOM), as well as the course director for Nutrition at the Cellular Level in the Nutrition program at KPCOM. Dr. Costin’s current research efforts have been focused on the Microbiome and sports nutrition as well as pedagogical research in teaching Microbiology through different modalities.
