Abstract
Introduction: Over the years, the growing use of micro mobility modes (such as e scooter, e bikes, etc) have complicated the landscape and confusion among road users and fatalities among road users have significantly increased. As a result, road safety practices, like Vision Zero, safe systems approach and other measures for the safety of vulnerable road users are being implemented. The objective of this study is to create an inventory of Vision Zero initiatives in different provinces. Further we wanted to explore provisions and awareness around the understanding and use of micro mobility modes among novice drivers.
Methods: A total of 15 individuals in Durham Region were surveyed on their knowledge on vision zero road safety practices and micro mobility modes using a focus group discussion approach FGD and survey methods. The individuals were interviewed in groups of 3 to discuss their personal experiences and perceptions on Vision Zero and micro mobility usage. To add on, a systematic literature review was conducted to find similarities among Vision Zero practices in different provinces and micro mobility frameworks. Findings from the study provided insights on micro mobility modes usage and their awareness around road safety practices and provisions.
Results: From the 15 individuals interviewed, it was found that the biggest concern was over speeding and weather conditions. Over 70% of respondents mentioned speed cameras as a major deterrent to over speeding. Many individuals were already aware of the issues mentioned and were able to identify the most promising practices and policies that will help make the roads safer, like traffic signs. Individuals felt safer with the addition of more intersections, as compared to roundabouts. For micro mobility modes usage, a number of factors such as accessibility, personal interests, distance, lack of knowledge etc. were identified to influence individual choice of mode.
Discussion: More research is needed to explore micro mobility modes of transportation and a need to integrate micro mobility modes and related terminology to raise awareness around the use of micro mobility modes. Although governments are adopting practices to improve safety on roads, novice drivers do not relate with Vision Zero.
