Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences is a part of the Health Sciences campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. The latter is a NAAC A++ grade University and has been ranked as the 7th best University in India by NIRF 2023. It is spread across 8 campuses in 5 states and comprises the entire spectrum of healthcare facilities, including medical, dental, nursing, pharmacology, nanomedicine, and allied health.

AIMS was inaugurated on the 17th of May 1998 by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in the presence of Her Holiness, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. From humble beginnings, it is presently an 1100-bed super-specialty tertiary care health centre with an attached medical college hospital. The annual patient turnover is over 10 lakh outpatients and 70,000 inpatients. The hospital has received the ISO 9001-2008 accreditation. It also enjoys accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for its laboratories and the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) for the hospital overall.

A new campus has been started in August 2022 at Faridabad (AIMS), which is now Asia’s biggest private hospital.

Apart from the extensive clinical work, AIMS has also established itself as a centre of
learning. The Healthcare Campus located at Kochi includes the Amrita School of Medicine, Amrita School of Dentistry, Amrita School of Nursing, Amrita School of Pharmacy, Amrita School of Nanosciences, and Amrita School of Allied Health Sciences.

Amrita School of Medicine, and the MBBS and Allied Health teaching programme was initiated in 2002, with an intake of 100 students per batch; now increased to 150. PG teaching started in 2008; MD/MS first, followed by DM/MCh in 2009. The teaching faculty has been a source of pride in the form of work done not only in teaching but also in research and publication. Till date (2023), there are more than 5000 SCOPUS articles published by the faculty of various departments, specialty, super-specialty, as well as pre and para-clinical ones. Many of the faculty have high h-index scores to their credit.
