Dr. Heather Abraham graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and attended the Wayne State University School of Medicine. She is an alumna of the WSU/DMC Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency, and, after completing a year as Chief Resident, joined the Faculty at Wayne State. She was appointed Associate Program Director for the Med/Peds Residency in November 2016. In service of resident education, she has worked to improve communication between the Residents and Faculty and has assisted in the development of curricula aimed at broadening the scope of the Med/Peds experience. One highlight, the Resident Wellness Curriculum, features consultation sessions with a clinical psychologist, as well as meditation sessions and content based on topics of interest to the residents.
Dr. Abraham was appointed Medical Director of the partnered DMC/WSUPG General Medicine and Ambulatory Practice (GMAP) Clinic in early 2020. This primary care practice houses the Internal Medicine and Med/Peds resident continuity clinics. During the challenging times of the CoVID-19 pandemic, she helped GMAP lead the charge in quickly pivoting to care offered predominantly via telehealth. With the support of the Academic leadership, residents and medical students were meaningfully engaged in this endeavor, to great effect.
Dr. Abraham is a Detroit native, and has been an active member of the community throughout her career. Her interests are in Primary Care, Transitions of Care, Physician Well-being, Resident Education, and Advocacy. Her heart lies with the Residency program, the School of Medicine, and the City of Detroit, and her professional efforts are in this service.
