Sports Medicine: Public Awareness
Abstract
Sports Medicine is generally defined as the area of medical science that is concerned with dealing with injuries and illnesses that are the result of sports activities. Although it is one of the important fields in medicine, public’s awareness in this part of the world of this particular branch of medicine is not what can be called adequate. Moreover, the numbers of campaigns that are held by sports-medicine specialized organizations are hardly noticed. To prove this, the first and only conference about sports medicine in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia was held on 21 February, 2011. This shows an optimistic step towards increasing the awareness of the public about the importance of sports medicine in our life whether we are players, observers or even interested in this field, but this is not satisfactory for an urbanized society that is trying to compete in the new world. In this paper we also consider one of the most debated topics in sports medicine which is the use of some substances to enhance the performance of athletes because ethics is heavily involved in this field and should be well taken care of. A survey based questionnaire was made to assess the public awareness. At the end, it was concluded that the Saudi community should be more educated about the importance of Sports Medicine and basic relevant application to this field.
